THE IDEA

A note from creator, Ethan Felizzari.

TURKEYS GO ON STRIKE came from a very different place then most of my work. As a young director & performer, I fell involve with the outlandish styles of Children's Theater. Initially, I thought of a funny idea about Turkeys literally going on strike for Thanksgiving. As I began to think about this show, I came up with a story that felt like an episode of SpongeBob Squarepants. Although juvenile, it was tons of fun for children & adults alike.

However, my mind and this story was changed when the incredible music duo of Michael Janover & Brian Sweeney were showing me a small portion of the opening number, “This is Home.” Once I heard it, I realized this story has even more possibilities. This was a story not only about acceptance and fighting for what you believe in, but a story that has tons of heart and soul.

At the time I started writing this, the political and social climate started to shift. It seemed as though racism and bigotry were more prevalent then ever before. While some of the story may come across as a family- friendly piece, the tones and underlying messages contain much more substance. The “Turkeys” represent the minority in a society that is ostracized or secluded by a specific group. Using images and representation of today's political and social climates, we were able to create a musical that at the surface, is a fun, outlandish piece, but in its core has tons of racially & socially charged messages.

We hope to engage audiences enough to have conversations about racism and brutality and about oppression. We hope this musical makes people think before assuming any aspect of someones life (whether it be gender, race or economic status). We hope to truly inspire others to stand up, fight for what is right, never be silent and continue to work.

There is so much work to be done in this world & we hope this musical can make even a tiny dent.
